FES or Functional Electrical Stimulation is a rehabilitation technique whereby electrical current stimulates nerves via electrodes on the skin to evoke muscle contractions even if paralysis prevents brain signals from reaching the muscles. FES directly commands the contraction of different muscle groups in the right sequence to generate a functional movement, using the body’s own potential energy.
